Even when the first IV attempt didn’t succeed, my son trusted Emily and allowed her to try again on the other arm.
Emily took over my child's care for the night shift, and from the moment she walked into the room, her uplifting and positive energy was evident. My 5-year-old son was terrified about having an IV started. Emily took the time to explain each step in a way that he could understand. She walked him through the entire process, demonstrated each step, and allowed him to see and touch as much of the equipment as was safe before starting the IV. I was honestly in shock.
As a registered nurse at another organization that does not specialize in pediatrics, I couldn’t believe the compassion and enthusiasm she exhibited to help my son feel comfortable so he could receive fluids for dehydration. Even when the first IV attempt didn’t succeed, my son trusted Emily and allowed her to try again on the other arm. Historically, he would require a minimum of 2-3 staff members to assist with vaccinations. This time, she brought in one extra staff member to be on standby. He ended up assisting her with releasing the tourniquet but wasn’t needed for anything else.
As a fellow RN, I know that nurses are not always recognized or appreciated by the patients and families they care for. This is why I made a point to nominate Emily for a DAISY Award. She is the true definition of a compassionate pediatric ER nurse, and I will never be able to thank her enough for going the extra mile to ensure my son received the best care possible. Thank you, Emily!
