There are many times in the hospital when nurses and staff go above and beyond. What isn’t as common is to be recognized so kindly for this fact! Emily Gay has been awarded the October DAISY Award for her collaboration and the true ability and desire to go above and beyond for one of her patients.

“I wanted to bring to your attention the actions of two individuals on CHAD who have truly gone above and beyond for a patient with a very complicated medication regimen, and actually, in doing so, caught an outpatient prescription error that could have resulted in the patient not receiving her intended course of medication. Emily Gay and R (Child Life Specialist) were putting together a day-by-day, dose-by-dose medication box for a patient being treated for neurocysticercosis with a 3 drug regimen. They labeled the box by date, then by time of administration of each dose, for the entire course of therapy so the patient would have extremely clear direction about what medications to take and when. They noticed while doing this that one of the medications was filled outpatient for a 5-day supply when the patient needed 10 days. They were able to coordinate with the in-patient team and get this fixed at Daly 3 so the patient would have her full regimen all set. This medication dispensing issue could have resulted in the patient either being unable to finish her course or, at the very least, causing a delay in the completion of the course. Additionally, due to the social constraints for the patient, having these pill boxes labeled and set up (including tablets cut to the required dose so the patient would not have to worry about this) I suspect will contribute significantly to her successful completion of her therapeutic regimen.
