On Thursday night, a nurse walked into my room, introduced herself in the most pleasant manner. She began her routine of checking my vitals and explaining what she was doing. I asked her how long she had been here and she said six months and began talking about how much she loved her job here at HMC. She was very engaging, knowledgeable, and compassionate. The entire night she was very attentive and compassionate- always smiling. She always made sure I knew what she was doing and continuously checked on my son and his needs since he was staying overnight with me. HMC is truly fortunate to have Emily. She is absolutely the epitome of the Heart of Hamilton. Not that I want to be a patient here again (lol), but if I did, I'd definitely want Emily to be my nurse.

It was so personal for her to make me feel safe after leaving SICU. It was a hard road that night. I was so cold and she returned, again and again, to put warm blankets on me. She was the only nurse I trusted with the new thing to help patients go to the restroom who are in the bed. Admirable is her middle name. I was so wanting water that tasted better than the tap water, she ran and ran as fast as she could and paid for me to have a big bottle of water that I can still taste today. The night I met Emily, she also helped me with her heart filled songs. At my house, I sing. I told Emily I had lost my song, so she sang and hummed for me. That's love. She is full of giving over and over. Until tonight I only had Emily for my nurse. I've seen Emily on many nights short but sweet, she came to my room on her break time to check on me.

Emily was very caring to my needs. My blood pressure was high. She cared for me personally until she got it down and staying with me while I walked down the hall after my surgery so I wouldn't fall. Also, controlling my pain and showing me ways to help with my breathing. I have never been taken care of by this most terrific nurse as well when I've been in the hospital before. She really loves her patients and shows how they can trust her.

Coconut water. Who would expect a busy post-op nurse to leave the unit, take the stairs and purchase from the cafeteria a bottle of coconut water? After a thyroidectomy, with a terribly painful swallowing situation, I casually mentioned how good it sounded and as soon as the cafeteria was open, Emily brought to my room this wonderful gift. This delightful nurse went above and beyond in every detail, from providing a cot for my wife's comfort to being prompt for every request that I had. She was exemplary. Her nursing skills were evident, she was enthusiastic about her job, her co-workers and other departments. Her heart and compassion were visible and her love for her profession a refreshing attribute. From re-arranging the room to accommodate our needs to providing expert care, this remarkable girl needs to be commended.
