This morning, we had a tiny little one go from bad to worse. My first response to the decreasing numbers on my screen was to look at a fellow nurse in the room and say, "Go get Emily." Emily has this incredible gift of walking into a room and taking over a situation. You see and you think, "Oh thank God. Emily is here." She jumped right in when I didn't have enough hands. She suctioned the blood out of the ETT tube when I was trying to hang meds. She charted minute-by-minute while I was having hard conversations with the parents. Giving blood, bicarb, epi, she was everywhere. Calculating doses and getting supplies and calling x-ray. I can't say with confidence that there is no way our patient would have continued to have a heartbeat for as long as he did without Emily Lamb being right there. And then, in the end, the compassion of her swaddling his tiny body and laying him in his mother's arms. Every unit needs an Emily Lamb. She is a true DAISY Nurse.
