While rounding today I was asking one of our patients if there is anyone she would like to recognize. At first she said no, everyone has been good and then she started telling me her story.
Her room had extensive cleaning done and Eric asked if she would prefer the bed by the window which she gladly accepted. She has allergies which had not bothered her in years, but she started having a little difficulty breathing and wheezing. Eric quickly recognized this and gave her the albuterol treatment she had ordered. She then was placed on O2. She had felt some relief and Eric followed up with her physician, getting orders for stat chest x-ray, cardiac enzymes and EKG. The patient JV told me she was very anxious about having the oxygen on and awaiting the results of her tests. She told me Eric was so compassionate. She was concerned about having a male caregiver but Eric was the best. He reassured her, stayed over a little on his shift until the test results we received and the O2 could be removed. JV felt Eric went above and beyond and was very comforting to her. He changed her opinion of male caregivers and was happy she had him as her nurse during this scary time for her. Eric handled her medical issues along with his ability to recognize her "heart" needs. Eric has won our patients over with his kindness and compassion.
