My husband did not have hours and Erica knew it and acted accordingly. All without a sense of crisis. She was well aware she was dealing with a patient near the end of life.
It is not often in life that one meets someone who has a profound impact on one. We had such an experience when my beloved husband was admitted to the Emergency Room in critical condition. God in his goodness put us under the care of Nurse Erica Besore. The first thing you notice about Erica is her competence and efficiency. She immediately sensed the problems and began to address them. She worked very closely with the doctor to provide the transfusions needed in a timely manner. My husband had been receiving frequent transfusions over the past month. None had ever been administered so quickly as Erica's. Usually, we had to wait hours. My husband did not have hours and she knew it and acted accordingly. All without a sense of crisis. She was well aware she was dealing with a patient near the end of life.
The second thing you notice about Erica is her calmness and understanding. She was always so kind and caring to me. She of course knew, way before I did, that we were dealing with end-of-life issues. She asked me what my concerns were and when I, through sobs, said that I HAD to be with my husband if there were a possibility that he could die. Then I told her that he was extremely close to our daughter who had moved in with us to take care of him. Our daughter would be heartbroken if she could not be there to hold her father's hand and talk to him and be with him. Erica was empathetic and thoughtful and came up with a solution. It was not until the next day that I realized how critical my husband was and that we were very close to the end of his life. Our doctor told us that she had not expected him to live through the night. But he did. And because of Erica my daughter and I were able to say a proper goodbye. I will never forget Nurse Erica and what she did for us. She is truly an Extraordinary Nurse and human being. God bless her.
