I was transferred from the ER of UNMH to the 7th floor (cardiology) after a 30 hour wait period in the ER. I was not in a very positive frame of mind when we met, so I asked Erin if she had read my charts and knew my medical history. She was busy making bed adjustments, connecting all the various devices and talking to me at the same time. Erin assured me that she had read my documentation and that I was a candidate for a pacemaker. As she talked, I knew she really cared. She assured me over and over that she was ready for anything that might happen during the next few hours left on her work shift. In addition to caring for 3 other very ill patients, the care she provided me took away the pain and gave me such comfort that I resorted to some humor and told her one of my favorite nurse jokes. I was able to rest and sleep in full confidence of the care I was receiving. When her work shift was over, Erin came to my room one last time. Erin, I hope the next nurse that welcomes me to a hospital room is just like YOU!
