It was crystal clear by that point that no one was cheering for my dad and my family more than Ethan. And no one was more invested in his treatment and well-being during that time.
My family and I spent a week in the Medical ICU upon my dad being admitted with a severe case of pneumonia. He ultimately succumbed and passed away at the end of that week. Despite the incredible loss, grief, and pain of having lost someone so close to us, we were enormously moved by the level of care rendered by the staff attending to my dad.

That care included great attention to his every need as well as the level of empathy, humanity, and decency displayed throughout his hospitalization. No single individual exemplified this level of care more than Ethan. He was with my dad for three consecutive overnight shifts, the last of which was the day we found out that my dad was declining beyond the likely point of survival. Ethan had already demonstrated a very high degree of responsivity, attention, and kindness by that time. At one point, my dad reported that he was having a very challenging time with his breathing. Ethan immediately identified the situation as demonstrative of anxiety and panic rather than what seemed more likely to be a true respiratory issue. This proper clinical diagnosis resulted in a much faster resolution of my dad's symptoms and, moving forward, a far greater level of comfort over the remainder of his stay.

On the night the physicians informed us that my dad likely only had another day or two, we were predictably emotional. But it was so apparent that this conversation deeply affected Ethan as well. It was crystal clear by that point that no one was cheering for my dad and my family more than Ethan. And no one was more invested in his treatment and well-being during that time. We can never repay him for his composure, his kindness and his skill. And we will never forget him.
