What Eva does as a nurse is put herself into the care deeply, putting our patient’s needs at the forefront of every action.
Sometimes it’s the little things… When we received a letter sharing how wonderful a patient’s care was while on one of our medical surgical units, it didn’t seem like it was going to be anything out of the ordinary. When we then received a call from a past patient and another from a former colleague about a nurse’s care, again, it didn’t seem like it was going to be extraordinary. But we were wrong. The common theme for these calls and letter was they were all about the care provided by nurse Eva Gutierrez. Eva is a great nurse. For these patients, they mentioned she did all of the clinical care beautifully; but what she did the best was take time to really CARE for and about them.
One patient described how Eva took 45 minutes to wash and comb out the patient’s long hair that had become matted. It may not seem like much, but when you are stuck in a bed for days on end and can’t comb your own hair, it means everything. Sometimes patients have to go through situations that are embarrassing. Eva makes such a situation not only tolerable but also provides a commitment of understanding and kindness to ease the feelings patients may experience when they are vulnerable.
