Recently I learned of an incredible situation. While driving to work, Frankie saw a car become airborne, flip and watched the driver eject from the vehicle.
Without planning, Frankie did what came natural, she immediately pulled over, raced out of her car, assessed the man, and began chest compressions.
Commuters stopped to assist, but shock at the horrific scene stunned them into silent statues. Frankie ordered one man to call 911. Another stabilized the neck under Frankie's directions. A doctor arrived with her stethoscope (she had been following the erratic driver and was on the phone with 911 relaying her concerns, providing location information, and the escalation of events). With Frankie's compressions, spontaneous respirations returned.
Through it all, Frankie never neglected to care for the whole person - a trait sacred to nursing. She saw the individual was exposed and ordered someone to cover him. Emergency responders showed up and took the individual to the hospital.
Frankie put everything aside to give her best to this stranger. A nurse, a construction worker, and a doctor came together to provide extraordinary care under astonishing circumstances. SJH is a better place to work and our patients receive a higher quality of care because of the everyday efforts of Frankie. Thank you.
