Five days after being admitted for a serious illness, my husband took a turn to an acute situation requiring immediate action. Gabbie Gates, who had been a caring, efficient nurse on his floor all week, called for a rapid response. A team who obviously had previously worked with her and respected her judgment jumped right in to accept her leadership, knowledge, and inspiration. The emergency was averted. She continued to check on him through the afternoon. Later in the afternoon, he developed a life-threatening situation. Again, this soft-spoken, caring nurse called for a rapid response, springing into action like a drill sergeant. She knew it was time to turn his care over to the house supervisor, who moved him to ICU, where he was constantly, intently cared for by never less than three nurses for almost eight hours. He was then cared for by the ICU staff until midday the next day when it was determined that his condition was much improved, and he was returned to Gabbie's floor. She and her team welcomed him back with compassion and joy. It is three days later, and she and those she inspires have continued to come by his room and encourage him. I believe her fast action saved his life. Our family is forever grateful. Gabbie has continued to check in with him, even when he is not one of her assigned patients. She is a knowledgeable, inspirational leader. I believe in Boone...and Gabbie!
