A few weeks ago, an established patient at GPW made an appointment to be seen for a "follow-up"; however, we were not prepared for how emotionally distraught he would be when he arrived. For background, this patient was AFAB (Assigned Female At Birth) and is in the process of transitioning with gender-affirming hormone therapy and, eventually, gender-affirming surgery. He presented to the clinic with a panic attack after a physical altercation with his abusive spouse and made an appointment at GPW because this was the only "safe space" he felt he could go in his time of need. My nurses quickly jumped into action, calming him down and providing him with comfort, support, safety, conversations, and snacks to help ease his mind. Remember: this appointment is only for 30 minutes, but my nurses continued to "tag-team," tending to him while simultaneously caring for our other patients that were being seen for appointments. While my nurses were calming him down, it was discovered that his spouse destroyed most of his and his young daughters' belongings out of spite. And without being asked, my nurses rallied together and brought replacement toys, paint, art supplies, and fun activities for him and his daughters and presented these gifts to him a week later. The patient has verbalized his appreciation and thankfulness for the additional support from our nursing staff while his family navigates through this difficult situation. This act of kindness was all spontaneous, and my nurses chose to spend their money to help a patient and his family in need. I am in awe of the support and continued care they show to this patient's family anytime they present to the clinic. They consistently compass the primary Mayo Values of RICH TIES (Respect, Integrity, Compassion, Honesty, Teamwork, Innovation, Empathy, and Stewardship.) They have gone ABOVE AND BEYOND to support this family's medical, mental/emotional, and spiritual needs. I have never been as inspired as I was when the patient reported to me how grateful he was to our nursing staff. I am honored to work with them and to call them my colleagues!
