After my ileostomy, I was admitted to private 3. I’ve not been in hospital before and had no idea what to expect. The pain meds made me very nauseous, and I was vomiting. The pain was excruciating beyond my wildest imaginings. I felt I was in hell and I was terrified. There was great activity and furor around my care, with multiple staff and doctors. 

In all the melee, I fixed only on one face and one voice. Gavin repeatedly assured me, “You’re safe,” “We’ve got you,” “All’s good,” and “You’re going to be all right.” He hugged me gently, rubbing my arm. Such an act of deep care and sincere kindness. I can only admire the wealth of compassionate spirit that enveloped me and be forever thankful and indebted.

To try to make me more physically comfortable, Gavin arranged for an air mattress for my aching body. For two weeks, I had ups and downs until I was discharged.

My abiding memory of my journey to wellness will be Gavin’s kind and calm assurances on that first and awful night.
