As a Veterans Advocate in Stanislaus County, I was contacted about a homeless Vet in Oakdale. I realized right away he needed medical care and he was admitted to your hospital. Not being a family member I was having difficulty getting information about his health and needs as I am trying to get him help through the VA and could not answer their questions and was being stonewalled. All of your staff on the 3rd floor was being as helpful as they legally could, but Gema went as far as to get me in contact with the patient's doctor. Once I had talked to her and got the clinical diagnosis, Gema then was able to fill in the blanks and inform me of what the hospital was going to do to treat him in layman's terms. She then eased the patient's concerns by, patiently and with great empathy, calmly explaining everything to him. I could see the effect it had on him as up to this point he was unsure of what was going on with him other than that his condition was serious. At the same time she was explaining all this, she was attending to his needs with true compassion.
