She is always willing to go above and beyond to ensure that our patients receive the best possible care and that our nursing staff feels supported and empowered.
Gentry has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities and has made a significant impact on our healthcare organization and the nursing profession as a whole. Gentry has been an employee of our organization for almost 22 years and a nurse leader for the past ten and has consistently shown dedication, compassion, and a strong commitment to growing the greater good. She is always willing to go above and beyond to ensure that our patients receive the best possible care and that our nursing staff feels supported and empowered. One of the many reasons why Gentry deserves this award is her innovative ways to create opportunities for strategic planning, that has included:
• Acquiring and growing Women and Children’s Resource Pool.
• Recognizing the need and initiating the development of the Lactation Department which has grown to serve three campuses that include inpatient and outpatient capabilities.
• Collaboration with NGHS Physical Therapy services to develop pelvic floor therapy for post-partum moms. She recognized that this population would need outpatient services and found available space to hold appointments. Currently in the state of Georgia there are three hospitals that offer pelvic floor therapy to post-partum women, two of which are NGHS hospitals.
• She initiated postpartum depression screening by implementing the Edinburgh screening tool to identify moms who are at risk for post-partum mood disorders. She collaborated with our system’s Behavioral Health to streamline patient access to mental health support.
• She recognized a community need for pediatric patients to receive asthma and allergy treatments in an outpatient setting by utilizing our pediatric nurses and treatment rooms. This has enabled the pediatric population to stay within their community, receive timely care, and avoid long-distance traveling to Atlanta. Pregnant women have also utilized this form of care by receiving outpatient infusions during their obstetric time.
• She is partnering to advocate for the expansion of our pediatric services to better serve our community. Gentry strategically works with our public relation department to expose to our community of the available services to our pediatric population.
• Strongly advocated for change to the bereavement policy to include employees who have experienced pregnancy loss.
In conclusion, these are perfect examples of how Gentry’s leadership encompasses the NGHS mission statement of “improving the health of our community in all we do.” Gentry’s dedication, leadership skills, and commitment to excellence make her a deserving candidate for the DAISY Leader Award.
