George absolutely hates praise and attention, but he is exactly what the DAISY Foundation celebrates: nurses who do amazing acts of caring as part of their routine work and constantly shrug off recognition because "I was just doing my job." These were his exact words when I shared with him the following praise.
George was caring for S and her husband had a cardiac event and was also in OHSU. They had requested to see if they could be put on the same unit or a shared room the day before, but due to the specialty care her husband needed, he could not come to her room, and it looked like she might be well enough to discharge in the next four hours and then could go to his bedside. Sadly the day George was working with her, a code was called and it was her husband. Despite an outstanding response by the caregivers, it did not look like he would make it. George was called and he brought S to her husband's side during the code, and she was near him when he did pass. His focus and compassionate care for S through this excruciating ordeal is a testament to George'sintense empathy.

You can imagine how difficult of a situation that was for everyone, especially the wife, S, to our patient, but George handled it wonderfully. He was calm and supportive of S, talking her through what was going on while also giving her the space to express her emotions and her extreme sadness in the face of what she was witnessing. Although the situation was challenging, everyone worked as a team. George, the primary provider team for S who also came to help support her husband, patient advocate, AOD, my team of RNs and providers, as well as the Code Team, I thank you. Overall a job well done despite the difficult situation that it was.
