The level of attention to detail that Gerry provided to each student was impressive.
My husband has been a patient at St. Mary’s Hospital since early March. I would see Gerry with the students at lunch, and he would always ask how his progress was going.
Gerry and the students were working/learning in the Neuro Intensive Care Unit recently. I have been able to observe Gerry and the students when they are in the unit. The level of attention to detail that Gerry provided to each student was impressive. One afternoon, Gerry stepped in to assist our nurse with moving my husband from the chair, via the Hoyer lift, back into the bed. That sounds like an easy process, but my husband is on a ventilator, and the room had to be rearranged to accommodate him sitting in the chair. Gerry worked seamlessly with the bedside nurse to ensure my husband was as comfortable as possible during the process and helped settle him back into the bed. As my husband is on a ventilator, the entire room needed to be reset to accommodate the chair, ventilator, and bed. Gerry graciously offered to help with anything needed to provide assistance as well as helping to reset the room.
I’m sure this is only one example of how Gerry goes above and beyond with care for students, patients, and families. He truly is deserving of the DAISY Nurse Educator Award.
