Gilbert listened very carefully and patiently to me as I described my situation. He was very sympathetic, and I remember him saying, "I'm so sorry this happened to you" more than once during my explanation.
I had a very bad reaction to the antibiotic Ciprofloxacine, which I was taking as a preventative measure against infection after I had Mohs surgery on my ear. In the past I had been allergic to penicillin and sulfa drugs, so the possible antibiotics I could take were somewhat limited. I went to the doctor's office because the Ciprofloxacine had caused my muscles and joints to become so stiff and painful that I could barely move. I also was starting to have trouble swallowing. My primary care physician was not available, so I was scheduled to see Gilbert Cerda, a Nurse Practitioner who worked with my doctor.

Gilbert listened very carefully and patiently to me as I described my situation. He was very sympathetic, and I remember him saying, "I'm so sorry this happened to you" more than once during my explanation. When I was finished, he immediately began taking steps to address my problems. First, Gilbert suggested a steroid shot and explained how it would help, but also asked me very respectfully if that was something I would like to do. I said yes, and within 48 hours, I felt practically back to normal. He also prescribed some pain medication for me to take as needed, and that was a tremendous help. He then ordered several blood tests to make sure we wouldn't miss anything that might be going on. As grateful as I was for all of that, the thing that impressed me the most was when Gilbert asked me if I would like to see an allergist since I was getting very concerned about being allergic to so many antibiotics. I thought that would be a good idea, so he included a referral to an allergist in my treatment plan.

To make a long story short, after 2 weeks, I had follow-up blood tests indicating that everything was back to normal. Then, when I went to the allergist, we discovered that I am no longer allergic to either penicillin or sulfa drugs. I have apparently "outgrown" those allergies - something I wasn't aware was even possible. I am thrilled that I no longer have to worry about that. In short, I realize that even though my experience was not life or death (although I believe it could have been), I was so impressed by the responsible, respectful, caring and compassionate care I received from Gilbert Cerda that I would like to see him recognized as the truly extraordinary nurse practitioner that he is. I simply can't thank him enough.
