Please consider our nomination for Glynn Huff as Harrison’s DAISY Award honoree. Glynn goes above and beyond each and every day. She exemplifies clinical excellence as well as promotes team work in the unit. She is authentic, skilled, and constantly at work behind the scenes—in fact, she is usually the one nominating others for awards! We strongly believe that Glynn deserves to be recognized for the value that she brings to Harrison Medical Center.

Glynn helps to create a culture of care and camaraderie among the staff in the ICU. She brings us together as a team. She organizes food deliveries to staff members who have lost a loved one, or have a new addition. Every month she comes up with a theme and—with the help of her family—decorates the hallways between the two sides of the unit. She fashions handmade cut-outs adorned with every staff member's name on them, so they can be hung proudly in the hallway. She makes sure that she has everyone’s name; including environmental services, clinical pharmacists, volunteers. She also creates little goodie bags filled with chocolate and other treats for every person, and places them in our lockers and other locations in the break room. It is a monthly reminder that we are all valued members of not only a team, but a family.

Speaking of family, Glynn often recruits her family members to come in and care for the staff of the ICU. As a night charge RN, some mornings she leaves the unit knowing that it is in a state of controlled chaos. As if by miracle, later that day, there will be a Crockpot full of chicken noodle soup, some loaves of French bread, and a platter of cookies waiting for us in the break room. On the 4th of July this past year, her son and husband came to BBQ for the staff to make sure that we all felt a part of the spirit that makes this country great. One year, when a snowstorm started while we were at work, her husband come to the hospital where he lay on his back on the snowy concrete to put chains on the tires of fellow nurses, so they could travel home safely. For Glynn, staff morale is a Huff family affair! Glynn helps to foster a positive work environment and she authentically engages every member of the team towards its achievement.

When W R, MD was asked to describe Glynn, he immediately spoke to her role as a strong patient advocate, with profound rapport with patients and their families. We will often see people coming into the ICU with baked goods (and pickled green beans!) addressed to Glynn, because they are so thankful for the wonderful care she provided to their loved ones. Glynn is a skilled communicator and fosters true collaboration between the healthcare team and our patients and their families.

Glynn also serves as a resource for other nurses, both in the ICU and other units. She is a charge nurse, responds to RRTs, she is involved in ICU staffing committee and our Performance Improvement (PIPE) Committee. She is certified CCRN by the American Association of Critical Care nurses. This past year she attended a national Critical Care conference, and was presented with new evidence based practice regarding sternal re-entry procedures and policies. Upon returning to Harrison, she felt compelled to bring the latest in best practice to our bedsides. She collaborated with Harrison's Cardiac Team to create education for the rest of the staff and created a Sternal Re-entry protocol, in order to achieve exceptional quality care for our post cardiac surgery patients. She collaborated with physicians, RNs and PAs in order to create drill-type scenarios to keep nurses informed and ready with the implementation of high-risk mock codes. Glynn helps to create and foster an environment of continued learning and clinical excellence in our ICU. She is well-liked and well-respected by her fellow RNs and Physicians. When we had an extremely critically ill patient admitted, needing a complex, newly implemented cardiac assist device, Glynn spearheaded the care of this patient, becoming an expert regarding the complex bells and whistles involved in taking exceptional care of this high-acuity patient.

Glynn is also active bettering lives outside of Harrison Medical Center by working closely with the Special Olympics of Kitsap County. She is a role model in our community; she always acts with a high level of personal integrity, and is a constant supporter of Harrison Medical Center and the exceptional work and care we provide to our region’s most vulnerable members.

Glynn is an important part of what makes the care patients receive in the ICU extraordinary. She values true collaboration and helps to create a culture of clinical excellence. Glynn Huff is an exceedingly worthy recipient of Harrison’s DAISY Award and we hope that you agree that Glynn ought to be recognized for the value that she uniquely brings to Harrison Medical Center.
