Grace came to the ER as a baby nurse, but quickly grew into a wonderfully mature RN. I have witnessed her on several occasions display patience, generosity and selflessness which is why she is being nominated for the DAISY award. We had a patient in our POD one day that received a very grim prognosis regarding their acute illness; family was having a difficult time coping. It was at the end of a very long, busy and grueling shift and although it was time to clock out, Grace, who was not directly involved in this patients care, without hesitation, stayed with the family. She made herself available to this patient's brother who was almost inconsolable. Grace provided words of calm and healing, as well as a shoulder to cry on showing the patient that nurses are not only to here to provide care to them but comfort for the family as well. The patient was very grateful and was able to smile because he knew his family would get the comfort they needed as well. ... Most all employees have to be resourceful when they work in Parkland as we don't always have supplies we may need. When she can't find something she uses her uniquely, creative mind thinks of the next best thing to do. It is extremely fun to watch the gears move in her mind as she develops her craft as an RN. She makes every patient stay worthwhile, no matter how long. ... It takes a great deal to come to terms with yourself when you are struggling in a particular area. Grace had a rough start to her career in the Emergency Department, but she was honest with herself and tried so hard to be the best she could be. She made it out of residency and continued to be humble, constantly asking for new learning opportunities. For example, Grace asked her service manager if she could train to triage. Her manager did not agree that it was her time. "Grace you're just not ready", her manager told her. With a smile on her face and more confidence than ever she went to her peers and asked what she needed to work on in order to be ready for that transition. She took their corrective criticism used it as motivation to help up her nursing game. Grace is now a triage trained RN and a pretty good one at that. It is difficult enough to be honest with yourself about your weaknesses but to be able to share her ambitions and those weaknesses with other's and have faith in your peers enough to know that with their advice and her since of self; she will be able to provide better care to her patients and be even more of an asset to her nursing team. ... In another encounter with a patient that I had the pleasure of caring for with Grace, the patient had requested to be called by a name that differed from his ID and medical record. While everyone else continued to call this patient by their given name, Grace, being the leader she is politely called this patient by the name he requested. Even though it was remarkably silly to most everyone else Grace saw this as an opportunity to gain her patients respect which, in turn, the patient instantly began to respond more positively towards staff, his demeanor changed, he smiled more and was more receptive to the care we wanted to give. Because Grace respected her patient's wishes his experience as a Parkland patient was a positive one and all other staff began to call the patient by the name he requested. Through this example, she embodied excellence, respect and leadership by standing up for her patient and doing what she knew was right as a person and a nurse. As you can see, Grace leads by example. She gets the job done and in a manner that draws people towards her creating and work environment full of positivity. ... On multiple occasions, I have had opportunities to work with Grace, mainly those as pod charge. She is a nurse I look forward to having in my pod because she is a delight to patients and staff alike. She is friendly, caring, loving, and above all else a great person to be around who will light up your day. Grace has a bright future ahead of her and has already shown so much promise in the short time she has been here. I think Grace was a wonderful addition to the Parkland Emergency Services family and she will continue to be in years to come.
