Throughout this ordeal, Ms. Grace never left our side. Her critical thinking, skills, and dedication were evident in every action.
I would like to nominate Ms. Grace Hiyao, Charge Nurse of ICU, for the DAISY Award. Last June, my dad was critically ill and admitted to the ICU, intubated, and on various treatments like nebulization and CRRT. Despite these efforts, his condition continued to worsen. One day, while Ms. Grace was on duty, she checked on every patient, including my dad. She noticed his deteriorating condition and took the time to assess him thoroughly, even though the doctors had said there was nothing more they could do.
Ms. Grace discovered significant gastric distention, checked his NGT, and found blood aspirated from his stomach, revealing a gastric bleed that had been overlooked. She immediately called the doctor, and with prompt treatment, my dad’s vital signs improved rapidly. His oxygen level rose from 88% to 100%, his blood pressure stabilized, and his breathing returned to normal. The next day, he woke up, and his condition continued to improve.
Throughout this ordeal, Ms. Grace never left our side. Her critical thinking, skills, and dedication were evident in every action. She also earned the nickname "Sharp Shooter" from her staff for her exceptional ability to insert IV lines. As a fellow nurse, I was deeply impressed by her knowledge, skills, and passion for patient care. I wanted to ensure that Ms. Grace received the recognition she truly deserves for going above and beyond. She is a true DAISY Nurse Leader.
