Gwen slowed everything down and educated us on every step of what was a new experience
I must admit when we found out we were pregnant, I was overcome with emotions, none more so than excitement for my wife and I to start a family. I have held this feeling every day for the past nine months and as I sit in the delivery room, I couldn't be more excited. Not far behind the feeling of excitement is nervousness. See, for our first child I had envisioned going to term, getting a call one day from my wife saying "It's time" and running out of work and meeting her here for a run-of-the-mill delivery and going home soon after. Except that's not what happened. What started as (what I thought) a 37-week appointment quickly evolved into meeting Gwen in Labor & Delivery. Things moved fast at the time, nurses came and went. And to be honest, when Gwen walked in, I thought "OK, a new nurse, and a new cog in the machine that is the delivery process." Now, all the other nurses and doctors were great, but Gwen was different. Gwen slowed everything down and educated us on every step of what was a new experience. For us, one of the things I appreciated about Gwen the most was that she spoke to us in medical terms, demonstrating her expertise in her craft; but then translated it into terminology that we could understand and make sense of. Other attributes that may go unnoticed by others but were not lost on me included: - She always identified herself when entering the room by saying "It's Gwen!" which gave us comfort because of the consistency. - She wrote her name on our board. We did our best to always remember the names of the many faces that came in and out; but memorization of a stranger's name, on the biggest day of our lives, was a stressor we didn't have to worry about once we met Gwen because of this simple and small attention to detail.
