Once Haley got back to the family, the mom stated that they really hadn't had a full meal in weeks, that they had been hungry, and she was unable to feed her children well. They were overwhelmed with gratitude and moved by Haley's kindness.
Haley was the assigned nurse for a woman and her children in the Emergency Department who had left their home to be seen due to violence in their home. The family had told Haley that they hadn't eaten very much at all that day. Haley got turkey sandwiches, apple sauce, Gatorade, and crackers for the family. They ate it all very quickly and were very grateful. Haley decided she could do more for this family. Haley looked in LA South for more food (sometimes we have frozen meals there), but unfortunately, there was nothing there. Haley looked in High Acuity and in CDU, where she found nothing more substantial. Haley decided she would go up to the cafeteria and personally buy this family food. Haley used her own money to buy multiple items for them to ensure they had a full, satisfying, and substantial meal. I believe Haley was a shining example of Eskenazi's values and mission: to serve the people of Indianapolis, to find creative ways to meet patients where they are, and to meet their needs in the moment. Haley treated them with respect, was professional, and was an excellent Nurse that night. She went above and beyond to care for her patients.
