From the very beginning of the first semester senior rotation, Hannah was a stand out. She was self-directed and provided for her patients' ADLs and performed above the expected level for a first semester senior nursing student. Her documentation in the EHR was impeccable and reflected the excellent care that she provided all of her patients. Her submitted assignments were also superior, demonstrating critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and clinical judgment. An example of her clinical reasoning occurred towards the end of the semester while caring for and providing a graded concept map on one of her patients. Most students would automatically prioritize airway and breathing, but Hannah focused on patient-specific presentation and needs. She prioritized a gastrointestinal issue over the patient's respiratory (chronic COPD) issue. Hannah was able to steadfastly defend this prioritization through clear discussions of how the gastrointestinal problem was delaying the discharge of the patient. Also, she articulated a clear understanding that the chronic nature of COPD was not exacerbated at the moment. This example demonstrated Hannah's ability to defend decisions with solid evidence and confidence. I have no doubt that Hannah will continue to advocate for her patients through the provision of excellent care as a practicing nurse.
