My sister came to the ED with severe abdominal pain for 6 hours. She got a CT scan and was diagnosed with a "garden variety" appendicitis. But for my sister, it was anything but "garden variety". For someone who's never had surgery or even been hospitalized, this simple 30-minute procedure was terrifying. On top of that, her abdominal pain persisted and increased in intensity. Haylie was our champion. She strongly advocated for my sister while she calmly fulfilled her RN duties. When an issue arose with the ordered antibiotics, she called the pharmacy and clarified with the physician to ensure that the five nights were stringently adhered to. She was compassionate while critically thinking through her patient's status and needs. Though this was a simple appendicitis, Haylie's skills shined. She is a great nurse and I am proud that she is promoting the nursing profession in this way.
