Heather is frequently recognized by patients and families for her thorough care. I recently received 2 letters from patients stating how much they appreciated the personal care Heather provided and how she explained everything. We recently had a post-op Cardiovascular patient in the ICU for 3 weeks who was re-intubated several times, on and off CRRT and was getting very depressed. As he became more stable, Heather took the initiative to work with his family to get him outside for some fresh air. Not only that, she arranged for his wife to bring their dog here so that the patient could get re-acquainted and spend some time with his "best friend". You could see the smile and determination return to this patient's face after this experience. I truly feel that because of Heather's efforts to get this patient outside and visit with his dog he was able to successfully recover. He was able to have several ventures outdoors as he continued to heal and progress. This act of compassion and kindness truly demonstrates the SSM mission and relationship-based nursing care.
