Heather was in an earshot of this information and immediately stepped in to assist without hesitation and without being asked.
I had the pleasure of working with Heather Appel, RN of 4SW. I was floated to the unit at 2300, the third of 3 units for me that night. At 2330 my patient was likely bleeding and found with a blood pressure of 60's/30's. Heather was in an earshot of this information and immediately stepped in to assist without hesitation and without being asked. Heather asked if I would like her to call the RRT for me, then she proceeded to get me fluids for the patient, primed the tubing and hung the fluids. Blood was ordered, and as I was gathering my supplies, she had already begun doing so for me. She then proceeded to ask if there was anything else that I needed. I thanked her for her help, and she responded with, "no problem, if there is anything else you need, just let me know." All of this was happening while she was awaiting a new admission of her own. I have been floated to other units numerous times, but on this particular night, I worked with a nurse who stepped up and worked as one. We do not see this everyday like we should. Heather did not know me or this patient. She could have gone about her own business and ignored mine, but she did not. I want to recognize her for her support and for going above and beyond.
