Heidi's pregnant patient presented in the Emergency Department with severe cramping, dizziness, and light headedness. She stated the nurse who treated her, Heidi, was the best nurse she has ever had in her experience at Providence and in the top five of the best nurses she has had anywhere. She stated that during her examination, Heidi took time and listened to her - pregnant, severe cramping, dizziness and lightheadedness. She also asked where the Providence staff had found the fetal heart beat the week before when the patient was in the Women's Center for triage.
At this time another nurse walked in and told Heidi where she should look for the baby's fetal heart rate based on the fact that she is 30 weeks pregnant. The patient learned at this time that Heidi is a resident. The other nurse left the room and Heidi asked again where the nursing staff had found the heart beat the week before. When she pointed to the spot, Heidi went to that location and immediately found the heart beat.
The patient credits Heidi with alleviating her discomfort in record time because she asked questions and listened to the answers, rather than unnecessary probing and causing her further discomfort and pain.
The patient requested that we recognize Heidi for her excellent nursing skills and bedside manner. She is grateful we have a nurse of Heidi's caliber working at Providence and thanks us for having her on our staff.
