Helen has been an RN for over 20 years and has worked most of her career in emergency nursing. As with all nurses, they continue ongoing education and skills daily and yearly. While a nurse is in the hospital or practice, they are expected to utilize these skills without fail. This RN had the opportunity to utilize skills outside of the medical facility and never hesitated in efforts to recognize an emergency and demonstrate these skills on the streets of town until EMS could provide assistance. Helen was on the sidewalk outside a store when a car careened off the street striking another vehicle. The driver was slumped over the steering wheel. It was reported by bystanders that Helen never hesitated but went to render care to the driver recognizing he was unresponsive, pulseless and apneic. With assistance, the driver was placed on the ground and CPR was initiated. Helen stayed with the victim continuing to render her knowledge and skills even when EMS arrived. The victim was transported to the hospital to the department in which this nurse works and then was transferred to Vidant Medical Center. Helen, along with a couple of other bystanders never wavered from giving care, giving this person the chance for life. Thank you, Helen, for utilizing your knowledge, skills, and willingness to help anyone in need.
