I ended up going through labor completely unmedicated, and I honestly believe I wouldn't have if it weren't for Helen. She provided emotional, physical, and comedic relief through this tough experience.
I was getting an induction with my first child, and I didn't know what to expect because I'd never been in labor before. After being at the hospital for two days and not sleeping, my water broke naturally, and I began having painful contractions. As my contractions began, the nurses switched shifts and walked in Helen Brott. She got an update from the prior nurse, introduced herself, and said: so you want to go unmediated? I told her that was the plan, and immediately, she began doing everything possible to make that happen. She told me which positions to labor in to make the process easier and even taught my husband how to help me get through the contractions. She applied the TENS machine without me even asking for it, and it helped a ton. Even though it was my first kid, she reassured me and told me I most likely would give birth in four to eight hours, which was a big relief because no one wants to be dealing with contractions longer than that. Even though she was helping me with everything possible to try to stay unmedicated the exhaustion kicked in around hour three and I ended up deciding to ask for pain management. There was absolutely no judgment, and she explained all of the risks and benefits of each option so clearly that I ended up asking for the epidural. I knew it would take longer than 30 minutes to get it inserted, so it was either I would have a baby at hour four or I'd get pain relief. I was so exhausted at this point that I wasn't able to breathe through the contractions, and I was freaking out. Helen stood by me the entire time and helped me through every single contraction while we waited for me to be fully dilated. I was feeling so disappointed in myself because I had every aid I could have to stay unmedicated, but I still requested help; having Helen tell me that everything was my choice and that she wasn't judging me for anything was reassuring. Right around hour four, I was 10cm, and she told me I could push. She tried to call in a midwife, but I'm assuming everyone was busy since there were so many other women in labor. She calmly came over and told me she might have to deliver my baby on her own, but if it makes you feel any better, I caught someone's baby in the hall three days ago. I had never met this woman before, and we hardly spoke because I was contracting every three minutes for four hours, but I trusted her completely, with no second thoughts and not a single bit of doubt that she could do it. She instructed me on how to push to have minimal tearing, and I did exactly as I was advised. My baby's head was visible at this point. It couldn't have been more than five minutes before my son was born, and the midwife and the rest of the team rushed in. The midwife had just finished gowning up, and she told me she had to catch my baby because he came out so fast. It took 18 minutes for me to push him out with minimal tearing. As I was being sewn up, Helen ensured everyone was at their best and taking the best care of my son and me. After everyone had finished their jobs and we got to rest, Helen came in with all the postpartum supplies and helped me go to the bathroom for the first time. I was very anxious, but I tried to walk by myself, and after using the bathroom, I tried to walk to my bed, and I passed out, but I didn't fall because Helen caught me. She immediately ripped open an alcohol wipe and told me to smell it.
After I got back to my bed, she told me about so many affordable alternatives to the popular supplies that would help me heal and would help me breastfeed. I ended up going through labor completely unmedicated, and I honestly believe I wouldn't have if it weren't for Helen. She provided emotional, physical, and comedic relief through this tough experience. I keep telling everyone I want her to deliver all of my babies, but unfortunately, she's retiring this year. Helen, if you read this, I might have to have you come out of retirement every time I'm in labor! Thank you so much, I couldn't have done it without you and congrats on becoming a great grandma!
