Helen was deemed an "excellent nurse" by a grateful patient who drew a big star next to her name on the nomination form. Unfortunately, this patient spent a significant length of time in the Emergency Department waiting to be admitted to a room with a comfortable bed. His words most aptly describe the experience:
"Helen was the first nurse I encountered when I arrived from the Emergency Room after 15 hours waiting for a bed. I am a post CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Graft) and laminectomy patient; I was in extreme pain. Helen helped to calm me down and take away my worries about my condition. She was always on time, consistently addressing when I called and responding in a professional manner. Please recognize Helen for her professional compassionate care."
According to this patient, Helen for exhibited the entire list of DAISY attributes:
Making a special connection with the patient
Including family members in patient's plan of care
Delivering outstanding education
Collaborating to meet the patient and family member needs
Going above and beyond the "call of duty"
Providing individualized, compassionate care
Striving to achieve excellence.
Helen has been described by her co-workers as a very compassionate nurse who gives each and every patient her utmost attention. Helen makes a meaningful connection with every patient and their family members. She's a nurse who is conscientious, and keen on attending to the details pertaining to patient care. Although she was reluctant about precepting, she has assumed the role and does a great job training new hires and residency nurses.
