Helen is the definition of a team player. There is no task that she would not help with. She is our go-to for difficult peripheral IVs, urgent orders, and a critical patient. She supports our staff more than we could ever ask. Patients are truly safer when Helen is at work. We have had codes, stroke alerts, and septic patients, all of whom have had better outcomes because Helen was our CRNP that day. More than once, I’ve heard nurses and staff say, “What would you do without Helen?” She truly is an asset to our team, and we feel so grateful for her. This award is people for people like Helen.

At the Honickman Infusion Center, Helen Evers-Hunt is an invaluable and integral member of our care team. Our high volume, fast-paced outpatient unit of mostly oncology patients plays a crucial role in caring for some of our community’s most vulnerable members, and I believe Helen has had a monumental role in its transformation over the years. She is a trusted resource for our staff nurses, physicians, and, of course, patients.

Our medical oncology team operates on a foundation of trust and respect, which is especially important for the large interdisciplinary teamwork needed for the complex care of our patients. She is approachable, honest, focused, and a great communicator. These qualities especially shine in times of urgency and uncertainty, such as during hypersensitivity reactions, which is not uncommon given the vast range of hazardous and reactive drugs administered daily on our unit, and when patients come in requiring urgent transitions in levels of care. When patients present to us with clinical deterioration, oncologic emergencies, and/or declining performance status, Helen is there to ensure these patients receive the care they need. She has overseen countless, often seamless, transfers of patients to inpatient care, and efficiently stabilized patients in critical condition while we awaited the arrival of emergency services. More recently, she has provided a much-needed buffer for ensuring patient safety.

Outside of emergent scenarios, no situation is too large or small for Helen’s expertise to meet our patient’s needs, whether it be basic wound care, pain management, collaboration with other specialties, or simply just advice about symptom management at home. In this way, she embodies the value of accountability for the status and well-being of our patients before they leave our care, a value shared amongst our entire unit.

This year, Helen helped lead a department initiative to improve our outpatient sepsis protocol and to streamline our infectious workup workflow to ensure all the necessary measures are completed in a timely manner. As an infusion nurse, this initiative has helped nearly eliminate unnecessary delays in care for our septic patients and has empowered our team of nurses to handle these situations with confidence and ease. In my career as a nurse, the reassurance and comfort that Helen brings to the nursing team has been unmatched. Outside of the clinical setting, Helen always takes time to empower the nurses on our unit by offering guidance and advice for those hoping to advance their nursing practice at TJUH. Helen is a role model to all of us, and the positive impact of her service cannot be overstated.
