A specific example of Hemm's incredible talent was when a patient came in from a motorcycle accident as my roommate. He voiced his anxiety and claustrophobia of hospitals and was clearly escalating in his uneasiness and raising my anxiety as well. Instead of dismissing it, Hemm addressed them head-on. She pointed out how spacious and aesthetically pleasing the room was, how big the window right next to him was, that a cup of tea was on the way, that he was safe, and that she could provide any other comforts he needed. I saw Hemm quell a spiraling man back into neutral simply by using her words and the items available to her. Including her passion. I thought to myself, I'd be fortunate to have Hemm as my nurse. Several days later I would get that opportunity.

Occasionally, life provides a specific instance like that which allows a nurse to shine. However, it's much harder to stand out on a day-to-day basis, even though that's where it counts the most. With Hemm, she's demonstrated a level of professionalism matched with compassion I've rarely seen in my extensive history of being hospitalized. Her enthusiasm to care, her tone, and her verbiage all provided instant comfort and ease even though my mind and body were going through great stress and pain. Comforting words are one thing, but to be able to provide the actual services with such ease is where Hemm's magic kicks in. More than just a med dispenser, Hemm took several steps to further provide the best possible environment for me while I was recovering and awaiting procedures. She noticed the temp of the room was too warm and had it adjusted and then followed up the next day to tweak it. A bed extender was discussed and within minutes an engineer was installing it. She has an uncanny ability to have a solution to an issue before I even know how to ask for it. A small discussion about a backside sore was met with supplies to aid in relief by the time I returned from the restroom. She took note of my visitors and timed my pain medicine around them so that I could garner the most enjoyment out of family. "I'll look into it" is not in her vernacular. Hemm simply accomplishes things. When I mentioned that a Doctor and my mother were interested in meeting, she contacted the appropriate parties to see if that was possible that day and followed up instantaneously. When nursing students were around, she spoke to them on a professional level and involved them in her care and why she was doing certain things. I could easily say anyone shadowing Hemm would be given the keys to becoming a next-level tier nurse. Hemm is flexible to my needs as a patient while remaining professional as to what is right and allowed medicinally. Some nurses give me all reasons on how busy they are. Hemm made me feel like I was her only patient. Hemm's ability to provide such an elite level of care while remaining bright and positive is what makes her a great nurse.

Hemm's talent of providing selfless care on literally every facet of comfort and making it look effortless and borderline magical is what makes her a DAISY Nurse. But it's Hemm's natural tendency to strive for her patient to feel absolutely cared for, safe and comfortable is what makes her an outstanding human being. Hemm's passion is what makes her an invaluable asset to whatever organization that is fortunate to have her.
