These infusions are truly life-changing for the patient and family. If Holly had not reached out to the pharmacy and gone the extra mile, the brand change would not have been discovered, and the patient's treatments would have been discontinued.
Today, I am nominating Holly Capra, RN for many reasons. First, it is important to know about CHOPS. CHOPS is a unit that cares for pediatric patients with many diseases and needs. Daily, we do sedations for Endo, MRI and painful procedures. We are open for lab draws for patients less than one and/or with special needs, developmental delays, or severe anxiety. We give biologics to our GI patients. Many days, patients arrive for blood transfusions and/or phlebotomy. Chemotherapy is administered almost daily to our cancer patients. And as with any hospital floor, we help with other things needed for our patients.
When I thought about nominating Holly, I thought it would be fun to see if "DAISY" matched Holly's personality and what she is like. In doing my Google search for this nomination, I looked up the word daisy on the web. There were many things that popped up, like definitions, types, colors, and meanings. The daisy is a white flower with an inner yellow circle. The white outside and yellow inside are both petals. The daisy is planted as well as grows wild. The overall meaning after reading through many descriptions is that it represents joy, hope, and the enduring beauty of simplicity. These descriptions make me think of Holly as a person and co-worker.
She is a seasoned Pediatric ER nurse and CHOPS nurse. She cares for all our patients. She is the nurse we all go to for lab draws or IV starts that the rest of us are unsuccessful in obtaining. She knows all the answers to the questions we ask. She can think through a plan and help us execute well and effectively. She is soft spoken and encouraging to us all. She has a sense of peace, simplicity and authenticity. She radiates joy and kindness. I believe many of us would love to be like here when "we grow up." For our patients and their families, she is kind and gentle. She is informative and sincere. She does many of our pre-calls for evaluation of sedation versus anesthesia. She is the first voice many of our patient's families hear. She knows our patients by name when they are recurring. She always knows something about them and their life. For Holly, it is hard to share a story in one instance. She is woven into the fabric of CHOPS, and we look better and are better because she is a nurse in CHOPS. Thank you for considering Holly for this award.

Holly consistently provides patients with compassionate care. She excels and shines in the unit as an amazing nurse and coworker. She is the go-to resource for difficult IV sticks and all questions related to patient care, finance/charges, and unit operations. Her teamwork is amazing, and she sets the standard on the unit for what a dedicated, hard-working nurse looks like. When our manager retired, Holly picked up several managerial tasks. She is now functioning as a floor nurse, unit pre-screener, and leading the unit during the interim of leadership recruitment. There are so many days that she goes over and beyond for her patients and coworkers.
One example of when Holly has gone above and beyond is when she provided care to a patient receiving rituximab infusions for opsoclonus myoclonus. Prior to starting the infusions, the patient had significant tremors that interfered with both fine and gross motor movements. The patient could not grasp an object, stand, or walk. The patient began the infusions and received them for over a year without any reactions. The results of treatment with rituximab were lifechanging for the patient. Her tremors resolved almost completely, and the patient was able to hold her own cup, stand and walk independently, and play with toys.
Holly recently was caring for the patient during an infusion, and the patient began having respiratory distress symptoms. The infusion was stopped immediately, and the patient was treated for the reaction. Due to having received multiple infusions in the past with no reactions, the provider decided to bring the patient back another day, administer a test dose of the infusion, and monitor for any reactions. The patient received the test dose infusion without any reactions. After having the test dose without a reaction, the patient was scheduled to receive a full dose infusion. During the infusion the patient had another reaction. Holly decided to investigate. After contacting the pharmacy Holly discovered the brand of rituximab the hospital keeps on formulary had changed three times since the patient started her treatments. Holly provided the primary physician with the infusion dates and brand changes. Based on the dates of infusion it was decided the patient should only receive the brand of rituximab that was infused during her first treatment. Prior authorization was completed, and the patient was approved for the original brand of the medication. The patient has since been able to continue her treatments without reactions. These infusions are truly life-changing for the patient and family. If Holly had not reached out to the pharmacy and gone the extra mile, the brand change would not have been discovered, and the patient's treatments would have been discontinued. Her dedication to the patient's care truly impacted her quality of life for years to come.
