Irene Kaminsky was his nurse again. My husband immediately relaxed remembering Irene and trusted her.
My Veteran husband fell. His complicated medical history, blood thinner Rx and dementia made the situation more dire. He was treated at a local hospital ER. A contrast cat scan and a blood test were done, and his lip was sutured. We were instructed to follow up because of all the results.

We went to the Altoona VA UCC a few days later because my husband was miserable. He could not help drooling. The bottom lip skin was seeping, and the inner lip suture was so annoying. A blood blister had developed near the suture. Irene Kaminsky was his nurse. How fortunate we were! She assessed his needs and cared for him, assuring his dignity and respect. She showed such confidence that he was in "good hands" and at "the right place." She put us both at ease. She called the NP who came, examined his lip and voiced her opinion that not much more could be done. However, Irene suggested possibly removing the aggravating suture and using silver nitrate caustic sticks. She showed extraordinary observation and decisive thinking with her suggestions. She skillfully assisted the NP in removing the suture and applying the silver nitrate. My husband felt relief right away thanks to Irene Kaminsky's skilled nursing. Also, thankfully, she offered continuous care, stating that if we needed anything, we should come back to the UCC. We trusted her.

We returned six days later. My husband's mouth injuries were healing while his rib pain worsened. Irene Kaminsky was his nurse again. My husband immediately relaxed remembering Irene and trusted her. Irene's exemplary skill of observation and thoughtfulness was "on top of her game" towards helping my husband once again. She knew his medical history and informed the doctor on duty. Blood tests were done, and Irene helped us with the unwelcome news that his blood INR was too high. Immediate intervention was needed. Irene put us both at ease again. She gently and respectfully explained what was happening, what would happen and why he had to be admitted to the hospital.

As an old, retired NP myself, I am grateful and appreciate that I met Irene and that she cared for my husband. I see that she is the "best model" of what a nurse is and does. My husband served his country in two conflicts, Vietnam and Desert Storm, and retired after 28 years and 9 months. I observed how Irene served him with consideration, respect, and appropriate nursing care. Our story does not end here. We will follow up in Pittsburgh, VA. As we move forward, we thank Irene Kaminsky for being part of our journey.
