Iris, after she had completed her 12 1/2 hour shift, stayed late to complete her patient charting, then went to a local store to purchase a jar of Vaseline for one of the elderly patients on her unit. This particular patient's personal jar of Vaseline was misplaced during the patient's transfer from another unit. As I rounded on this particular patient this morning, I discovered Iris had not only returned with a new jar of Vaseline but was decked out in isolation (contact) wear and assisting with feeding the patient her morning breakfast. The compassion and empathy Iris displays for her patients is always exceptional. However, this particular morning Iris continued to display her compassion for an elderly patient on her scheduled off day and long after working her 12 1/2 hour high acuity, patient volume shift. It is a comfort to know I work in the presence of an exemplary caregiver such as Iris.
