Jack fixed my mum; he saved her life. I truly believe that it was not just down to diagnosis and medication but care and dedication. I'm not a religious person, but if anyone was sent to help my mum medically, myself mentally, and my family reassuringly, it was Jack.
My mother, whom I care for full-time and live with, was admitted to the hospital following a fall that had resulted in breaking her ribs. One week later, my mother was awaiting transport home as she was fit for discharge. Luckily, there had been a delay in receiving her medication to leave.
My mother began to feel more and more unwell, which is when I received a phone call to say her heart rate was worryingly fast and increasing. I went to my mother right away. Upon arrival, her heart rate was 216 bpm.
A nurse had to explain that she was placed on medication to attempt to slow her heart rate. There were plans B and C in place, but they were taken away as it was highly unlikely that she would survive these options. I was in shock, devastated, and confused. She was coming home to myself and my two excited children, and now she was potentially dying.
This was when Jack entered the room to introduce himself at the start of his shift. He immediately checked to see if my mother's blood test results had come back, and my god, did he shift when he saw how low her potassium levels were. He had everything on the go and in place immediately, and he gave me my first real glimmer of hope that night. OK, so he just read the results and acted on them accordingly, like all nurses would?
Jack was INCREDIBLE. His demeanour, his mannerisms, his passion, and his care were all major factors in giving me hope that night. I knew that while he was looking after my mother, everything would be OK, even if it wasn't. I could tell that he would give his absolute all to taking care of her in every way he knew.
I did go home to my children to get some sleep while we waited out the treatment while my mother rested. Jack reassured me that he would call me immediately if need be at any point. Going home would not be something I would ordinarily do, but I was at ease knowing she was in the best care with Jack.
I called again through the night and spoke to Jack, who kept me hopeful, reassured, and informed without sugarcoating things. In the morning, I called for an update and was disappointed when I was told there was no Jack currently working and I would have to wait for a call back from someone while staff did the handover.
Not long after, I received a call from Jack, who was excited to tell me he had good news regarding my mother's health despite the fact that his shift had ended. He saw I had called and made sure he had told me before he went home.

I thanked him so many times, and he would tell me it was just his job. No, Jack, you are a beautiful human. You're kind, committed, compassionate, and caring, and a true DAISY Nurse.
Thank you so much for everything you did, and please, keep being you!
