Tanner took the time to build his rapport with them. Since the patient was resistant to engagement, Tanner focused on getting comfortable with his physical presence by being in the room with the patient, focusing on his work, or reading a book.
A patient was admitted to the adolescent unit of the UNMH Children’s Psychiatric Hospital. The first day of admission, the patient was withdrawn with minimal engagement. Tanner understood that because of the patient’s extensive trauma history, their being withdrawn was likely due to the lack of trust. Rather than force the patient’s engagement as much of the team did, Tanner took the time to build his rapport with them. Since the patient was resistant to engagement, Tanner focused on getting comfortable with his physical presence by being in the room with the patient, focusing on his work, or reading a book. As the patient warmed up to Tanner, he began engaging them in non-treatment related conversation. When the patient was ready, Tanner helped them develop a clear, individualized treatment plan with small, achievable steps. Tanner was also instrumental in helping to bridge the gap between the patient and the rest of the care team. This is just one example that demonstrates Tanner’s dedication and care to providing excellent care to all of his patients.
