When she replied only a banana since the day before, Jaime took her to the cafeteria and bought her lunch.
Throughout the pandemic, everyone has worked to compassionately enforce visitation restrictions. Often there are circumstances, however, that require the Nursing Supervisor to intervene to find the best balance between our need for safety precautions and our desire to create healing environments with the support of loved ones. Jaime was nominated by a colleague for the care shown in such a situation when he answered a request for assistance with the wife of a patient:
The patient had been brought in after a heart attack and cardiac arrest and was in critical condition. They were from out-of-state and the wife was here alone and upset. Jaime first calmed her down, and after hearing the circumstances, asked her if she had eaten anything. When she replied only a banana since the day before, he took her to the cafeteria and bought her lunch. Then he arranged with the charge nurse in ICU to have her allowed back in to sit with her husband. Jaime checked on the two of them later and saw them talking together. The patient later coded again and expired. Had Jaime not taken the steps to get the patient's wife calmed and able to be back in the room with her husband, she would have missed speaking to him again before he passed.
