I am writing this award nomination for a patient who was with us and passed away.
I was the charge nurse on Thursday, the patient was so emotional and crying. His brother was at the bedside, his parents were out of the country. I had tried to comfort him as much as I could. End of the day when I was leaving, I had asked him "anything else?" to make him feel more comfortable. He accepted that he was dying and at end-stage.
His words made me cry. "All nurses are great here. I know I am in my final days. God decided to take me home. I will be so appreciative if you can assign me, Jamie, as my nurse. That is the only request and I will be so happy. Jamie always makes me so comfortable, I don't have a sister but Jamie makes me feel like I have a big sister too."
For a dying patient requesting a nurse who is treating the patient as her own brother, patient, and friend; I was so emotional and definitely assigned Jaime the next day. He died in two days. Hats off to Jamie. That is the best blessing a nurse can get from working with our less fortunate patients.
As a charge nurse, I have heard more patients recognize her all the time. But to see a 23-year-old patient who was in his last hours; recognize her and not be able to nominate her; I thought I have to write for our dear patient and nominate Jamie for this award.
