I observe all the time how wonderful all the nurses are at the Springboro ED. Working with them is an honor, but when your child is the patient and only chooses to come here for help, that speaks volumes. This particular Saturday, R had been out of the hospital for about 2 days. She had no diagnosis and no resolve as to why she was continuing to vomit for over 8 months. R's episodes are very violent and painful, as well as, exhausting. She had an extremely painful episode and went into a panic attack, so we ended up in the ED for help. The physician felt she did not need any repeat testing and told us to follow up with her internist. Jan was her nurse. She sat by her bedside and spoke from 40 years experience as a nurse. She talked about the horrible cycle of R's episodes. Her not wanting to eat because of anticipation of vomiting and the pain. Then so much hunger sets in. She then eats and the cycle starts again. Jan gave R ideas for foods to eat to stimulate her appetite and to use ginger for nausea. She encouraged her to get counseling to help her cope. She challenged her to "take her life back". The mind, body, and spirit connection is powerful. It is crazy how we know things, but when you are challenged by someone that just has the spirit of calmness and kindness, how it gives the patient a new perspective. It also gives a sense of empowerment. R and I want to thank Jan for her sweet spirit and the wisdom she gave us. We left feeling better about the situation. Jan is an incredible lady, nurse, and friend that we are so grateful for.
