Jan was nominated by the Nursing Supervisor for always providing quality, compassionate, holistic care to our patients. In patient care she is always going above and beyond. The nomination is an example of what an extraordinary nurse she is to our patients:
We received a patient on the floor that was diagnosed with a terminal illness and would most likely be spending the last days on the unit. This patient and patient's family were not prepared for the diagnosis and were understandably upset and angry. Jan continued to show compassion to the family and began talking with the patient in preparation of what is ahead. The patient shared with Jan that their wishes of going to Hawaii was not going happen now. This was a promise to the spouse. Jan thought why not bring Hawaii to them!
Jan organized all the staff and nursing students on the unit to accomplish this big surprise. Jan brought in decorations for the room, Hawaii themed food to share, and Hawaiian music. When the patient was not in the room, Jan organized the efforts of everyone to quickly change the room into Hawaii. When the patient and family were brought back to the room, they were all greeted in Hawaiian style by all the staff and nursing students. Jan’s efforts brought a wonderful amount of joy to this patient and family that will never be forgotten.
