The instant connection, both being from the bayou, tugged on Jeni's heartstrings and she knew she had to help this family.
Jeni was the nurse for a patient who was dying with no advanced options. She found out that the patient was from the same part of the bayou where she grew up. The family and Jeni immediately bonded over this fact and the wife felt more comfortable that Jeni was taking care of her husband in his final days. Eventually, the family decided to transition to comfort care until he passed. Jeni was told in report that they were going to donate his body to science. Jeni was getting to know the family more and was wondering why they chose to donate the body to science since it was not common. The wife confessed it was because they could not afford to cremate his body. This just did not sit right with Jeni. Jeni knew the wife wanted to keep her husband's ashes if she could. Jeni found out the cost of the cremation and talked with the doctors and coworkers about possibly donating money to help cover the cost of cremation. Soon most of the staff on the unit/department donated and raised more than enough money for the wife. Jeni went in with the team and told the wife that they raised the money to pay for the cremation and she could bring her husband's ashes home. There was a huge sigh of relief, and the wife started crying. She was so happy.

After the patient passed, the wife hugged Jeni and was so thankful. Jeni said, "I know we don't know each other but I'm glad you had someone from home to be with you today..." The wife agreed and continued to cry and hug Jeni. The instant connection, both being from the bayou, tugged on Jeni's heartstrings, and she knew she had to help this family. Jeni went above and beyond to make sure this wife was at peace while she had to say goodbye to her spouse.
