Criteria for DAISY includes the following excellent nursing behaviors - beyond what is commonplace: special connections with patients and families, "makes a significant difference", using compassion and skill delivering Extraordinary nursing care, positive attitude, and commitment to the highest standards of nursing - Jennifer Beck received more than one nomination that told the story of how she is a DAISY.
"I think Jennifer is an extraordinary RN because she always establishes special connections with her patients and families. Over the past two years or so she became an extension of one of our patient's family not only while at work, but off duty as well. M was diagnosed with cancer many years ago and has had periods of remission, reoccurrences and hospitalizations. Over the years, M became a part of the Infusion Center family; she required multiple visits for blood product transfusions. Jennifer always took extra time with each visit to help M with different aspects of care - arranging visits and appointments with consulting physicians, assisting with contacting home health agencies and making appointments at the Wound Care Center. She always made herself available to help M when the complexity of care issues became overwhelming. I think she made a significant difference in this family's life when about two months ago, M was told there were no additional treatments to offer - and she was sent home with Hospice care. For the last week of M 's life this special nurse, Jennifer, took hot meals to M's home, sat with the family and helped ease their fears - she definitely uses compassion and skill to provide extraordinary nursing care - within and without the boundary of the workplace."
Another nomination - "Jennifer makes a special connection with every patient she meets. She is compassionate and proactive with all her patients - she is an advocate for them - and they have confidence in her. Recently she saw a need and took the opportunity to help a patient who was having difficulty paying her medical bills. On several occasions, Jennifer went beyond the role of an Infusion Center nurse to make multiple phone calls on behalf of this patient - and even helped with the paperwork to get supplemental medication coverage. As a result of this work - going outside the everyday scope of her role and being a supportive patient advocate, this patient was able to get some assistance with her chemotherapy bills. The patient was so happy and appreciative - Chemotherapy is very expensive and getting financial aid meant the world to this patient. This extraordinary nurse, Jennifer, made a huge difference by helping to alleviate some stress and giving the patient one less thing to worry about."
Jennifer Beck's supervisor agrees - Jennifer makes a difference in the lives of her patients every day - and is a wonderful example of a DAISY nurse.
