Jen was alerted to the monitor at her station when my husband's heart rate spiked to 140. She responded immediately, in time to keep F from falling from the bed. He was having another seizure type episode. She prevented further injury. He had several previous episodes causing wounds and bruises.
Jen called for additional help and managed to get him lying in the bed correctly. She called for the doctor and her description of the event and the numbers on the monitor helped the doctor to determine this was caused by heart function, not the brain.
They began an IV drip of Amiodarone to correct the rapid heartbeat and get the heart working together within itself and the kidney.
Jen took the time to explain the purpose of the IV and how the heart is supposed to function. She showed caring for both F and myself. She has remained attentive to the situation and has made dietary suggestions, which would help the heart and kidney function.
Besides the technical expertise she has shown, Jen shows an understanding of the emotional well-being of her patient. Yesterday, F and I celebrated our 51st wedding anniversary here in our room. Jen got permission from the doctor for F to have a cake to celebrate. She called the cafeteria for a festive cake and made a fresh pot of coffee so we could have a party with another couple who were here visiting with us. We all had a slice.
I appreciate Jen's efforts to make our day special and the role she played in diagnosing his condition. Job well done!
