My patient with multiple medical problems became confused and was screaming in pain; after receiving pain medication her pain improved but she became less responsive and decreased respiration. I ordered Narcan to reverse the narcotics, correcting the respirations and sedation but worsening the pain. She required recurrent stimulation as the Narcan "wore off" rather than giving her more. Jenny volunteered to stay with my patient after her night shift was over (she was not even my patient's nurse), holding her head and reminding her to breathe. Jenny's behavior should be an example of the care and compassion all of us as caregivers should strive for and should be our standard at St. Luke's (which I think Jenny proves is the case).
