Each and every day, our patients at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Jeddah continue to benefit from the effort and commitment of our Research Specialist, Dr. Jennifer De Beer, and we are grateful and thankful for the phenomenal work she has done to educate and empower nurses across our facility.
Dr. Jennifer De Beer joined our services in the year 2021; prior to this, nurses were unable to understand the process of Research and Evidence-based practice no matter how hard we tried. We needed an expert to train us in this field of the unknown that all nurses were afraid to venture into. Although we knew about EBPs we clearly had no idea of how the process worked in full and we could not put the pieces together. Upon arriving into Jeddah, Dr. Jennifer was a newbie but brave enough to attend our professional development team meeting, our main goal was to complete an EBP in 2021.
Our team was terrified that all of us might not meet the requirements for this goal as the year was quickly passing by without any solid progress.
Our sympathies were collectively with Dr. Jennifer as she slowly but determinedly began the process of teaching and engaging us in Evidence-Based Practice.
Following her teaching, we successfully completed an EBP project on Falls prevention in the Outpatient department. We further translated this EBP into a PI project for which we won the status of displaying our project on the balcony on Quality Day.
This success that we had achieved in the field of Research spurred us further into other areas of Research methodologies. In 2022, we undertook full research on the experience of physicians, nurses, and patients with telephonic consultations. This was an exciting time for us because we grew braver and braver. As we all know, without EBP and Research, nursing cannot be a scientific field that we wish for it to be.
Today, we proudly report that we have a full journal club, a full research team, and a PI project team. Collaboratively, we are involved in many improvement projects and are training as many nurses as we can. Dr. Jennifer put together a journal club article critique competition this year that showcased the talents of nurses with John Hopkins tool article critiques. Dr. Jennifer, in her free time, ran complementary EBP courses on Saturday. Dr. Jennifer has displayed an exceptional example of commitment that is so rare to see in the world today.
If it wasn’t for Dr. Jennifer, we would have never reached or aspired to reach an awesome level of understanding. We thank her from the bottom of our hearts for the impact she has made on nursing care and upon us, the nurses who deliver patient care.
