Jennifer was able to obtain an order for discharge and discharged the mom at the same time as transport arrived so that the mom could follow the ambulance and be with her baby.
Jennifer was floated mid-shift to the NICU to help us on a busy day. She had a full patient assignment and had just received a report on her patients. I was taking care of a baby that needed to be transferred to another hospital for a particular specialty consult. The need for transport was sudden, and the mother was still admitted as a patient in MIU. She was in our unit visiting her baby prior to transport and was upset that her baby was going to be separated from her.

Jennifer became aware of the situation and jumped into action. She had been taking care of the mom prior to floating to our unit, so she called the mother’s current nurse and the mom’s OBGYN. Jennifer was able to obtain an order for discharge and discharged the mom at the same time as transport arrived so that the mom could follow the ambulance and be with her baby. She went above and beyond to ensure that both mom and baby would not have to be at the two hospitals. She did all of this without even being asked. She truly looked out for this patient’s best interest.
