Jen is an outstanding nurse, and I am so grateful she took care of my son. At just five years of age, he was scheduled to have his first surgery. As one can imagine, this can be a scary time for a child. Jen was the charge nurse that day and went above and beyond to make sure that he was comfortable. Prior to the surgery, Jen asked me what my son was interested in and what he liked. I didn’t think much of it, but I told her that he was into Super Mario Brothers. When we arrived in Same Day Surgery the day of, Jen had a Super Mario Brothers walkie-talkie set ready for him. His face lit up when he saw this toy. She explained to him that he could use the walkie-talkies to communicate with Mom and Dad before the surgery. What really surprised me was that Jen went out of her way to put brand new batteries in the walkie-talkie set and had the toy set up and ready to go when we arrived. Putting batteries in a toy is not in the job description of a nurse, but this nurse went above and beyond for her patient. She made my son smile and laugh at a time when he was vulnerable, and made his pre-op experience exceptional. In my opinion, she checks all the boxes for going above and beyond, and I would like to nominate her for the DAISY Award.
