Jess was my preceptor and trained me throughout my orientation as a Labor & Delivery nurse. I got to know her and see how she practices as an RN during my orientation. She truly loves her job as a nurse and proves as an example to the newer staff the passion that she has for nursing. The patient care that she provides is outstanding and is very kind while answering the patient's questions. I've learned from her to especially pay attention to the father of the baby and other family members, as they are often overlooked. She goes out of her way to provide personal touches that make the patient's delivery experience one that she will never forget. An example of this is that she plays a "Happy Birthday" song at the time of delivery to celebrate the birth.
She has worked here for many years and has delivered her three kids here, which shows her dedication to the hospital. During difficult times with the Ascension merger and threats of closing the hospital, she has always had a positive attitude and worked to improve morale within the staff members. She always steps in to be helpful, especially as a charge nurse. Recently, she went through a difficult time with the unfortunate unexpected death of her father. After taking some time off to be with her family, she bounced back with the same positive spirit.
Jess Burke is deserving of this DAISY Award and as a new staff member, I aspire to be like her.
